The next great challenge is coming:
As a Senior / Principal SDET / Tools Engineer, you will design, build, and own the engineering tools used across the project. Your work spans Unreal Engine 5 (C++) and pipeline/DCC tooling (Python), with a strong emphasis on scalable architecture and production reliability.
You will also contribute to the in-house test automation framework, write tests for your tools, and act as a technical leader within the Core Tools Team.
Unlike a pure SDET role, this position spans the full tooling ecosystem — editor tools, pipeline systems, validation frameworks, and automation infrastructure.
Superpowers you have:
- Strong production-level modern C++
- Extensive Unreal Engine 5 tools development (plugins, UMG/Slate or Dear ImGui, reflection system, subsystems, editor scripting)
- Understanding of UE systems: rendering pipeline, LOD/HLOD, Nanite/Lumen, World Partition, profiling (Unreal Insights, Stat)
- Production-level Python (pytest, CLI tools, pipeline scripting)
- Perforce (p4) workflows and automation
- REST API / JSON integration (including authentication and reliability patterns)
- Tool architecture design (plugin systems, extensibility, maintainability)
- Strong 3D pipeline understanding (LODs, materials, draw calls, collision)
- 4+ years of software development experience, including at least 1 year in a senior/lead capacity
- Hands-on Unreal Engine experience on shipped or live projects
You’re a rockstar if you have:
- DCC scripting (Blender, Maya, Substance Painter)
- Houdini (SOPs / PDG)
- CI/CD experience (GitLab CI, Jenkins)
- C# / .NET (test automation framework contributions)
- Render programming (HLSL, RDG) or Chaos physics
- Test automation frameworks (unit/integration/E2E)
- Visual testing/screenshot comparison systems
- AI-assisted tooling (LLM APIs, automation, log analysis)
- Jira/TestRail integration experience
Becoming part of Room 8 Group, you will:
- Own end-to-end design and delivery of major tools and systems used across the team (UE5 editor/runtime plugins and Python pipeline tools)
- Define and evolve technical standards together with the Lead SDET
- Build UE5 editor tooling in C++ (Slate/UMG or Dear ImGui, subsystems, console commands, rendering/profiling integrations)
- Develop DCC and pipeline tools in Python (Blender, Maya, Houdini, CLI tools)
- Integrate systems with Perforce, REST APIs, and JSON-based pipelines
- Design and maintain scalable, host-agnostic tool architectures
- Mentor mid-level engineers and act as primary reviewer for complex changes
- Investigate and resolve deep technical issues (engine internals, rendering, World Partition, performance bottlenecks, CI failures)
- Collaborate with artists, designers, QA, and gameplay/engine teams to identify tooling opportunities
- Ensure high code quality through reviews, testing, and refactoring
- Stay up to date with Unreal Engine, DCC workflows, and emerging AI-assisted development tools
