    The next great challenge is coming:

    As a Senior Level Designer, you will join our team building a high-fidelity XR vehicle driving simulator on Unreal Engine 5, shaping the open-world environments that trainees drive through. In this role, you will own the layout of large-scale terrain and the training zones within it, from open, high-traction expanses to soft sand, rocky obstacle fields, dense foliage, urban streets, and coastline, designing the spaces, routes, and surface behaviour that make each driving exercise meaningful and repeatable.

    This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced level designer who understands open-world streaming, environment performance, and the demands of immersive XR/VR, and who can collaborate across disciplines to deliver a turnkey product under a defined timeline. Acting as a bridge between environment art, design, and engineering, you will translate driving and training objectives into well-structured, performant, navigable spaces, balancing fidelity and immersion against a strict frame-rate budget.

    Superpowers you have:

    • 5+ years of experience in Level Design, with a strong focus on open-world or large-scale environments for PC titles;
    • Solid command of Unreal Engine 5, including World Partition, level streaming, and the landscape and terrain tools;
    • Proven experience with open-world terrain layout and partitioning large spaces into distinct, purpose-built zones;
    • Experience designing varied environment types and biomes, such as open high-traction surfaces, soft sand, rocky/obstacle terrain, foliage-heavy areas, urban streets, and coastline;
    • Strong route and mission-flow design, structuring how users move through and progress across a space;
    • Experience setting up terrain surface systems, assigning physics materials per zone so handling differs by surface;
    • A working grasp of driving-space metrics (lane thresholds, incline grades, and confined-area manoeuvring) and how layout affects vehicle behaviour;
    • Experience placing navigation and waypoint markers for in-world guidance and routing;
    • Experience laying out AI spline paths and traffic routes;
    • Experience designing spawn points and randomised placement for replayable scenarios;
    • Experience building functional, believable environments such as facility compounds, settlements, and controlled access points;
    • Strong VR/performance awareness, covering HLOD, LOD budgets, and draw-distance management to hold a stable frame rate;
    • Experience with lighting setup, including baked static lighting, dynamic vehicle shadows, and day/night presets;
    • Experience placing collision and reset/boundary walls to keep users within playable space;
    • Excellent cross-disciplinary communication, working closely with design, art, and engineering.

    You’re a rockstar if you have:

    • Background in driving, racing, or vehicle-simulation products;
    • Experience with off-road or terrain-driven environments (sinkage, traction loss, deformable ground);
    • Familiarity with environment performance profiling and optimisation for immersive XR/VR;
    • Experience authoring custom landscape materials and procedural placement workflows;
    • Comfort working with data-driven, modular level-building pipelines;
    • Proactive mindset with a strong eye for polish and technical detail.

    Becoming part of Room 8 Group, you will:

    • Lay out and partition large open-world terrain using UE5 World Partition and level streaming;
    • Design distinct training zones (open high-traction surfaces, soft sand, rocky/obstacle terrain, foliage-heavy areas, urban streets, and coastline), each targeting specific driving competencies;
    • Set up terrain surface systems, assigning physics materials per zone so vehicle handling differs by surface;
    • Design routes and mission flow, defining how users move through and progress across each space;
    • Define driving-space metrics (lane thresholds, incline grades, and confined-area manoeuvres) to set the right level of challenge;
    • Place navigation and waypoint markers for in-world guidance and routing;
    • Lay out AI spline paths and traffic routes for in-world vehicles;
    • Design spawn points and randomised placement to keep scenarios varied and replayable;
    • Build functional, believable environments such as facility compounds, settlements, and controlled access points;
    • Set up lighting, including baked static lighting, dynamic vehicle shadows, and day/night presets;
    • Place collision and reset/boundary walls to keep users within playable space;
    • Optimise environments for stable VR performance, managing HLOD, LOD budgets, and draw distance against the frame-rate budget;
    • Collaborate with environment art, design, and engineering to deliver immersive, performant spaces;
    • Participate in playtests and feedback loops, iterating to raise clarity, fidelity, and polish.
