Why this report exists
Dozens of generative AI (genAI) art tools now populate the market. If you’re a game developer, knowing which to use, and how exactly to use them, can be challenging.
That is why we at Room 8 Group have spent six months reviewing dozens of genAI tools in the context of 2D and concept game art, to find the best ones available in early 2025. We’ve written a report summarizing our findings, which you can download now.
Our report answers the following questions:
- As of early 2025, which genAI tools are most appropriate in the context of 2D and concept game art and why?
- What stages of the 2D art production pipeline are most and least suitable for genAI?
- How are we using the findings of this review to make partners’ workflows more efficient and effective?
- How are we teaching our specialists to be more responsible and effective using genAI?
For game developers and publishers, choosing the right genAI tool is about more than art quality.
It’s also about whether the tool is legally safe to use when a non-disclosure agreement has been signed with a partner; whether the company that owns the AI tool owns the data inputted by users when generating art; how well the outputted art can be controlled by the inputting party; the tool’s cost; and more.
Our review:
- 34 tools reviewed
- 16 passed a preliminary check
- 4 in particular stood out
- 2 superior models recommended, which we are already using in production
We understand how quickly the genAI art space is changing. That is why we’ve designed our internal training courses to be adaptable and forward-looking, so they can easily be applied to other genAI art models in the future.
We’re already using the findings of our review on real projects for our partners. So far, we’ve cut the time needed to complete important tasks by 30%–50%. Details can be found in the report.
