Porting and optimizing Godfall for PS4

The most popular articles
Counterplay Games developed Godfall for PC and PS5, but needed a trusted partner to help port it to and optimize it for PS4. That’s where Room 8 Group came in.
What we did
The PS4 porting and optimization process ran parallel to the PS5 and PC development to ensure releases were coordinated. After the partner set specific performance goals for us, we began work with an in-depth analysis of the project to identify the key challenges, bottlenecks, and solutions needed.
We assembled a team of engineers and technical artists and made sure every specialist integrated into the partner’s development pipelines right away, strategically coordinating our development plan with Counterplay’s.
Porting for this project included a massive amount of optimization work, as we implemented PS4-specific requirements and fixedbugs.
Key highlights
CPU Optimization
- Blueprints optimization
- UI/Slate optimization
- Physics optimization
- Navigation and AI optimization
- Animation optimization
GPU & Art Optimization
- Shader instructions adjustment
- Shadow optimization
- Adjusting assets and LODs
- Post-processing adjustment
- Material adjustment
- Particles adjustments
- Tessellation adjustments

The outcome
Despite a tight and challenging schedule for the amount of work required on Godfall, especially given the target performance requirements of a stable 30fps, we showed our industry-leading expertise in porting and game engineering. Our expert understanding of the PS4’s limitations and stringent quality standards meant we solved the partner’s problems quickly and efficiently.
